Cleaning up desktops one PC at a time

Inbetween slacking off and procrastinating from doing Corporate Financial Management homework, I jumped onto Impulse just to have a look around and see if there was an update or anything. Upon browsing to the My Desktop tab I noticed a free trial for ObjectDock. Seeing that my desktop was a complete mess and I was in the middle of making an attempt to make my PC look as new-fangled and cool as possible I decided to give it a try.

After downloading it and mucking around with the themes and settings I got it to a nice position and size. I thought to myself that this program would be a good way to get rid of some of the clutter (My Computer, My Documents etc) and free up some room on my desktop. It only hit me later on that I could do so much more than that...

Banishing the game shortcuts to be imprisoned within the magical folders of genres.

I have been able to get rid of about 20+ game shortcuts on my desktop, carefully organised away in their appropiate genres so they are easy to find and execute.

The more astute might notice that I have started work on creating my own set of icons for each game genre's shortcut folder. I am working on a G36C one for first-person shooters, and have got a good idea of what I want for the rest.

All in all ObjectDock will give me a hell of alot more room on my desktop (once I sort out the rest of the crap left). I am eager to investigate as to what the Plus version offers over the free trial.

If I didn't do the same, I would be appalled.

OD+ is the first thing I install on a fresh system install, after the 'compy condoms' of Anti-virus, et cetera - before WindowBlinds, before CursorFX, before IconPackager.

And while the free version is great (and I used it for a year and a half before upgrading), OD+ is even better. Why? Tabbed docks and flyout docks. Instead of making a folder for all those game icons to go in, you can make it a flyout dock - kind of like how the forecast flies out on the weather docklet. Very, very cool. And tabs are super-handy - they make your dock take up far less space while still being sexilicious.

I'm very minimalistic when it comes to my desktop - I would probably commit suicide before having as many icons on my desktop as you've got, Phazon - so OD+ scrubs me happy every time.

You should buy the Plus version, you'll love it even more. You can have tabbed docks and multiple docks...Trust me, buy it and you won't be disapointed. Also, I know some folks who make skins for it.

Ahhhhhh, got bit by the bug! You'll do yourself even prouder once you see what the rest of this stuff can do.

Three things you can try in the mean time:

A. Go to the Screen Shot Gallery to see some of the different levels of customization you can achieve.

On a personal note, I can't look at a PC without Stardock.

Objectdock along with rightclick is one of the most supremely useful desktop applications
around. I would be lost without my tabbed docks. I highly recommend buying the plus version
it is worth every penny.

PS. and like someone else said, looking at a PC without stardock makes me wan't to blow chunks.
not just little ones either, but big honking chunks.

You guys have me sold to get the plus version. The tabbed / flyout docks sound particularly interesting and will probably provide a superior solution to my current method of using the folders which produce drop-down lists.

For those wondering, here's my finished version for my FPS icon. Its orientated better now to suite OD better, and I've cleaned it up and added a slight drop shadow to it.
